Inter Milan are working hard to get midfielder Nico Barella signed to a new deal as they are wary of the player changing his mind on a potential move to a club like Newcastle.
That’s according to Il Giorno, relayed by L’Interista, who say the Italians are going full speed ahead to get Barella signed to a new deal as soon as possible.
They explain that the work at Viale della Liberazione never stops, and the focus is set to be on getting Barella’s contract extended to avoid a situation like that of Milan Skriniar.
He left on a free transfer in the summer, joining PSG for nothing and robbing the Italian side of a huge transfer fee in the process.
That is something they are keen to avoid happening again and, despite Barella having a deal until 2026, the discussions have started on a new contract.
That’s because they know there is widespread interest in him, with Newcastle even making a bid to sign the Italian this summer.
They ‘knocked on the door’ for the player, according to the newspaper, although he rejected the proposal at the time and preferred to stay with the Champions League finalists.
They, though, are fully aware of how situations ‘change suddenly’ and the Skriniar affair has taught them that those who make promises and show affinity to the club can quickly change that stance.
That’s what they fear could happen with Barella and Newcastle and, so, work is on to ensure there is no Skriniar repeat at any point in the future.
