For the past month, West Ham United were pointed out as a potential destination for English winger Marcus Edwards, who’s been playing for Vitória Guimarães.

It was reported the Hammers would put £18m on the table for his signing, and when seeing those claims, the Portuguese media claimed that would be enough to take him.

However, things had an unexpected turnaround yesterday, with Vitória Guimarães announcing that Edwards agreed to a new contract with the club.

When reporting the renewal today, local outlets say he’s now ‘safe’ from the interest. Newspaper Record is one of them, claiming he had been much wanted by the ‘English market’, so the Portuguese side decided to hold and protect him.

Newspaper O Jogo is another one mentioning he had been linked to West Ham, but is now ‘happy and comfortable’ in Guimarães.

Edwards is now tied to the club until 2024, and has a release clause of €50m, probably frustrating any potential plans that West Ham had to sign him in the January transfer window.

Vitória have always been likely to decline any short offers for Edwards, since 50% of a transfer fee shall go to his former Tottenham Hotspur.
