Back in the summer of 2022, when Benfica and Celtic made Jota’s permanent transfer official, the Eagles made €15m with his sale.
It turns out that a great profit in that negotiation was the 30% of a future transfer that the Lisbon side managed to include in the deal. That’s today explained by the Portuguese media.
Benfica announced this week their financial report for the 2022/23 season, and as A Bola covers it, they highlight how much Benfica got with Jota’s transfer from Celtic to Al-Ittihad.
The Saudi club paid the Hoops €29m for the move, and €7.585m ended up going to the Eagles.
That shows that Benfica managed to make half of the money again just by watching Celtic selling the player to Saudi Arabia.
The situation creates a debate on whether the Eagles sold him for too little, and that’s something they should reflect when negotiating their young stars again.
However, there’s no denying that the percentage of the future transfer was a great way to benefit from that move, and that’s certainly something Benfica will continue to try and include in the future.
