Towards the end of the January transfer window, Wolves secured the signing of Willian Jose from Real Sociedad on loan.

The Spanish slant at the time was that the deal would almost certainly be made permanent, due to clauses in the initial loan. Jose went on to make 17 Premier League appearances and scored one goal.

As the season came to an end, and it became clear Wolves wouldn’t be keen on keeping the striker, the slant in Spain changed slightly. It was then explained that the original deal meant the English club would have to pay Real Sociedad a big chunk of compensation if they didn’t sign Jose permanently.

Mundo Deportivo now report the amount was €4m, and they say this has been paid.

Real Sociedad now expect to collect a further €8.5m from the player’s status as he’s on loan at Real Betis with a ‘kind of hidden compulsory purchase option’. That sounds a lot like how the Wolves situation was initially reported.

If the report is true, it’s an awful lot of money for a short loan which didn’t work out for either the player or Wolves.
