Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero’s future will be away from the Premier League side, and Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed his desire to leave.
Over the past few weeks, Inter Milan have been working on securing the centre-back’s services.
On Thursday, Sport Witness covered claims from Italy that they are close to agreeing a €40m deal with Tottenham. The Serie A winners have to agree term with Romero, and there’s only a €500k gap on wages.
No problem with Tottenham
Gazzetta dello Sport picks up on that and claims the Nerazzurri and Spurs have narrowed the distance in the ‘last few hours’.
Tottenham Hotspur are asking €40m for the Argentina international and have reached an agreement with Inter Milan.
This is an ‘important, perhaps decisive, step’ but the latter are struggling to agree with Cristian Romero. He is asking for €8m net per year.
This is a different take when compared with yesterday’s report. For now, Cristian Chivu’s side haven’t given up on the 28-year-old.
Benjamin Pavard, who earns €5m net per year, is on the market and Inter are waiting for the right offer. His teammate Alessandro Bastoni is also attracting interest, and his sale could generate €60-70m.
Their exits may see the San Siro club make further advances to convince Romero.
Why Inter are not rushing
Despite reaching an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur, the San Siro club are in no rush. That’s according to Gianluigi Longari, who covers Cristian Romero in his column for Sportitalia.
Inter Milan have signed John Stones for free, and this gives them cover already.
Stones’ arrival allows the Italian champions to negotiate for the Argentine from a ‘position of strength’.
Longari states: ‘The demands that emerged in recent talks, especially regarding the contract, have convinced the management to slow down and not rush things.’
This could be a tactic from Inter Milan to put pressure on Romero to lower his demands.
