Brazilian clubs are often in financial struggles and looking for resources to keep them competitive. So when one of their former players is involved in a big transfer, it’s always great news.

That’s why Gabriel Magalhães’ signing for Arsenal has been a topic at Avaí. Speaking to Marcou no Esporte, club president Francisco Battistotti explained that they should soon get money from the move.

“Now in 2020, when they sold him to Arsenal, Lille negotiated to receive in four instalments. The club gave Avaí the percentage of the first. The second, third and fourth instalments would be paid between 2021 and 2023,” said Battistotti (via Globo Esporte).

“We negotiated to anticipate. They had financial problems and Lille were sold to an investment fund. We continued to negotiate with this fund, which accepted the proposal and we are due to receive this week. This was the difficulty we had.”

Globo Esporte writes that Avaí had the right to a percentage due to FIFA’s solidarity mechanism, but the bigger part comes from the 10% they had on a future sale.

Gabriel Magalhães left Avaí for Lille in a €3m deal back in 2017. It was a good thing for the Brazilian side to keep a percentage for a future move, as Arsenal spent €26m to buy him last summer.

With 17 appearances for the Gunners so far, the defender was quick getting a place in Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up. He was left on the bench after his Coronavirus diagnosis in December, but appeared again against Wolves on Tuesday evening.
