At the start of the week, as Manchester City were linked to a number of defenders, they were said to be after Benfica’s Ruben Dias.

The Portuguese press obviously covered the rumour at the time, saying the 22-year-old won’t leave the Eagles for less than his €60m release clause, with the club actually looking to raise this price with a new contract.

The chase for Dias continued to be a topic in Portugal for the coming days, and now even club president Luís Filipe Vieira has spoken about it.

The official has been interviewed by TVI24, and when asked about the clubs who have been wanting to sign the defender, he’s claimed that “so far they haven’t appeared” (via Record).

Interestingly, when speaking about the new contract, Vieira didn’t sound fully confident about it. He’s first praised the player, and then claimed that Benfica won’t do crazy things just so Dias can sign a new deal.

“We will talk again. He’s a super-competitive Benfica player, he could be the future captain and Benfica should not lose him. He’s one of the leaders of that dressing room. He’s one of those who we will make the effort to keep, within a certain limit.”
