Liverpool’s ‘great interest’ in Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella could force them into handing the Italian a new contract early to ward off interest.
That’s according to L’Interista, who cover the situation at the club today and how Liverpool’s focus on Barella could speed up plans at Inter.
They explain that the club are currently pressing ahead with several renewals and one of the open dossiers they have on the managers desk in Viale dell Liberazione is that of Barella.
The dialogue with the Sardinian midfielder is open but at this moment in time there is no urgency as his current deal expires in 2026, which allows the club to negotiate with ‘relative calm’.
The intention is there to get a new deal signed and extend Barella by another two years, moving his end date to 2028 and adjusting his salary to the level of the top players in the squad.
The ideal plan would be to get it done early next year to avoid any issues in the summer, when he will be in the final two years of his current deal and that could cause issues.
The fear is that they enter that scenario and a big English team, in this case Liverpool, present the club with a ‘monstrous offer’ and force Inter’s hand as they would be getting ‘dangerously close’ to the deadline without the strength to say no.
They know there is no shortage of suitors with Liverpool and others having shown ‘great interest’ in the midfielder and potentially securing his signature.
Inter’s hierarchy know that and intend to shelter themselves from that potential scenario by opening talks early over a new deal.
