VfB Stuttgart are ‘negotiating in the background’ to try and get Deniz Undav back from Brighton and Hove Albion, who remain ‘stubborn’ on the matter.

That’s according to Fussball News, who provide the latest on the drama around the German striker as negotiations continue to stall.

They explain that at this moment in time it seems Brighton have the ‘better hand’ when it comes to the poker game over the striker, as they have him under contract and no need to accept an offer that is below their valuation and would potentially see them losing out too.

Stuttgart, though, believe they have ‘two trump cards’ in their hand, the first of which is time. Brighton cannot sell to anyone other than the Swabians this summer.

Their second benefit is that they have the player’s will onside as he ‘absolutely wants’ to stay in Stuttgart. The Germans see this as a particularly strong negotiating tactic as they don’t believe Brighton will risk having a dissatisfied player in their ranks.

That may be something of a romantic approach, though, as it is equally unlikely that Undav wouldn’t give his best should he be forced to stay at Brighton.

According to Kicker, that’s a distinct possibility too, although it rests on the future of Brazilian Joao Pedro.

They explain that Brighton have so far ‘blocked all of VfB’s efforts’ to sign Undav permanently and that could be because they want him as a ‘bargaining chip’ should Pedro leave.

The Brazilian has suitors and is ‘in demand’ this summer and it seems Brighton are planning for Undav to remain and replace him if he does go.

That’s a big if at this point but it adds another layer, and another complication, to what is undoubtedly now a saga and already a drawn-out one at that.
