Newcastle United could be given their chance to sign Memphis Depay in January, with Barcelona determined to move him on.
That’s according to Sport, who explain that the needs of Newcastle and Barcelona ‘could converge’ and make a deal happen.
The Magpies have been linked with a January move for the Dutchman again over the last week, having explored the possibility of signing him in the summer.
Reports in England have made it clear they intend to renew their interest in January and are determined to get their man.
Sport now offer Barcelona’s slant on things, explaining that their plan, in conjunction with Depay, is to ‘take advantage’ of the World Cup and revalue the forward.
Once that is achieved, they will look at the Premier League clubs who are interested in him and see if there is a deal to be done.
Depay would prefer to see out his contract and leave as a free agent but ‘the needs of Newcastle’ and the ‘desire of Barca’ could converge so that a transfer is closed in January 2023 instead.
That is because of Newcastle’s ‘financial muscle’, which allows them to be in a position to tempt Depay to bet on their future project in return ‘for a fortune’.
