Sevilla have moved to further wipe away any trace of Monchi from the club, following his move to Aston Villa last summer.
That’s according to Diario de Sevilla, who say the club have moved to replace some of the Aston Villa chief’s former employees as further backing to Victor Orta.
Monchi left Sevilla last summer after something of a falling out with the club’s management, eventually moving to Aston Villa to reunite with Unai Emery and lead the project at Villa Park.
He was replaced by former Leeds United director of football Victor Orta, who has since set about dismantling most of his predecessor’s work.
Sevilla have now continued that and their effort to ‘end any trace of the Monchi era’ by dismissing Fernando Navarro and Emilio de Dios, two of the top footballing figures at the club.
Indeed, Navarro had been handpicked by the Aston Villa director during his time at the club and was considered his replacement before Orta eventually arrived following his time at Leeds.
Now both have been dismissed, with Sevilla officially announcing their departures yesterday and claiming it was part of a plan to regenerate and remodel the club.
The move has not gone down well with the fanbase, who have been left unimpressed by the treatment of Navarro in particular.
It’s instead being seen as an attempt by Orta to further strengthen his position at the club, which has been questioned amid a poor campaign.
The former Leeds man had found himself under question after the failed appointment of Diego Alonso earlier this season but has since received backing from those above him and the removal of two Monchi favourites is now being viewed as him looking to put his own men in place.
Whether that works out remains to be seen, but what is clear is that Sevilla are determined to forget all about Monchi, even after the success he brought them.
