Despite months of claims about his transfer situation, and a return to AS Roma being declared imminent a number of times, Chris Smalling remains a Manchester United player.

The defender moved to the Serie A club on loan last summer and managed to impress for them. That made a permanent deal likely, and Roma have been trying to reach an agreement with the Premier League club.

Gianluca Di Marzio now reports the Italians are making a new offer for the defender, which he puts at €15m. Such a figure has been claimed before, but perhaps this time it’s a straight payment rather than including bonuses.

This will be the final attempt and Roma will presumably move to other options should it not be accepted quickly. There’s even been claims in Italy that they could shelve the idea of signing Smalling until January, such is the frustration over current negotiations.

Di Marzio doesn’t think United will be able to get a better deal from an English club, and therefore he believes the offer will be considered carefully.
