Werder Bremen have made a last-ditch effort to sign Sekou Mara from Southampton as they need a replacement for Niclas Füllkrug.
That’s according to L’Equipe, who say the German side have been put on ‘alert’ at the end of the transfer window as Füllkrug is on his way to Borussia Dortmund.
The Bundesliga club are set to lose their star striker with just over 24 hours left in the window, a situation they had not anticipated, and which has subsequently left them scrambling.
They have ‘activated several tracks’ in the hunt for a replacement and one of those leads them to Southampton’s Sekou Mara.
The young striker, who has been called up to France’s U21 squad by Thierry Henry, is under contract with Southampton until June 2026 and so the Saints have no need to sell.
Werder Bremen want to ‘take advantage’ of the fact they were relegated to the Championship last season and offer Mara the chance to play at a higher level.
The idea is to sign him on loan with an option to buy but there is an acceptance they will need to be‘convincing’ if they are talk Southampton into accepting such an offer.
