Because dealing with Manchester United for Chris Smalling wasn’t complicated enough, AS Roma thought it would be a good idea to open another set of talks with Ed Woodward, this time for a right-back.
Their ideal scenario would be to bring Diogo Dalot, who is also out of favour at Old Trafford, to help their full-back situation, but it appears they also have the backup plan of Timothy Fosu-Mensah, just in case.
This is pushed by Gazzetta dello Sport, explaining the Portuguese is the ‘preferred’ option of the two, but they describe a deal for the Dutchman as ‘easier’, although he would have to renew his contract with the Premier League club before moving to Italy.
Il Tempo also have a bit on the situation, explaining Roma have ‘asked for both’, but the answer from Carrington regarding a loan for Dalot is a no for now.
As for Corriere Roma, their stance is a bit different, pushing the line that it’s actually Manchester United trying to get the Serie A side to take Fosu-Mensah instead of Dalot, wanting to ‘insert’ the versatile defender in the Smalling operation.
Judging by all these reports, it appears it’s the three time Netherlands international who could be the one exiting Old Trafford in the coming days rather than his Portuguese counterpart.
