Athletico Paranaense have ‘intensified’ talks for the signing of Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho, according to claims from South America.

Goal Brasil reports club president Celso Petraglia is the one personally handling the talks with the 36-year-old, who’s expected to become a free agent this summer after deciding not to renew his contract with the Citizens.

Athletico are said to be working ‘with caution’ during the negotiations, and their idea is to have Fernandinho on a deal which lasts until December 2023 at least.

According to Goal Brasil, the player is waiting for the end of his contract with Manchester City so he can actually take a decision on where his future will lie.

On Thursday morning, the Brazilian media also came up with a story saying Santos are interested in signing the midfielder, but the competition from Athletico ruined their plans.

The white and black side heard it’s ‘nearly all agreed’ between Fernandinho and his former club, so they backed off on their chase for now.
