Borussia Mönchengladbach have been left angry at Ipswich Town’s decision to field youngsters in their upcoming pre-season friendly.
That’s according to Kicker, who report ‘trouble before kick-off’ between the two sides and cover comments from Gladbach sports director Roland Virkus on the matter.
The newspaper explains that the German side had planned for their fourth pre-season game to be the ‘real assessment’ of the squad and where they are at but have been left angry by Ipswich instead sending their Under 21s.
That is contrary to a previous agreement between the two clubs and Gladbach ‘have no understanding’ of why Ipswich have done it. The game has not been cancelled due to the lack of time to find a replacement but those fans who have bought tickets for the game have been promised a full refund.
“We had a great training camp and wanted to round off the week with a test against a good English team,” Virkus said.
“The fact that Ipswich Town are not sticking to their contractual agreements due to their personnel problems disappoints us very much and also makes us angry.
“Unfortunately, it was no longer possible to organise another friendly opponent at short notice, so we have no other option than to make the best of the situation.”
There’s currently no word from Ipswich Town on the matter, although this appears to be a growing trend with Premier League sides this summer.
Earlier today we covered how Las Palmas were considering cancelling a friendly against Liverpool after getting word they would be using their Under 23s rather than the first team.
They had been left shocked by the reports and it seems Gladbach are in a similar position, left angry and perplexed by Ipswich going back on their previous agreement.
