Following reports that Liverpool are interested in signing Florian Wirtz, there has been a quick response from Germany, and more specifically Bayer Leverkusen.
Simon Rolfes is the one who was asked directly about claims in England that a €92m offer could be on its way for the playmaker, and he didn’t waste time in dismissing it.
His comments were relayed by Kicker on Wednesday, and didn’t leave any need for interpretation when it came to the subject of Liverpool having approached Bayer Leverkusen for Wirtz.
The last part was about Wirtz leaving in January, and the sporting director made it clear that a potential exit was ‘not an issue at all’, meaning they aren’t considering it in the slightest.
As to whether they could be tempted to change their mind should a €92m cheque be presented to them in exchange for the player’s services, he added: “No, we are a football club…”
In short, they aren’t looking to make huge sums of money in January, and are quite happy with their squad, especially when taking into account the fact they are currently undefeated in the Bundesliga with nine wins from 10 games, two points ahead also undefeated Bayern Munich.
Therefore, Liverpool might need to put even more money on the table to get their man, or simply look elsewhere.
