Earlier in the transfer window, we saw a report from Poland claiming that Stade Rennais were interested in signing Jan Bednarek from Southampton.

At the time, it was said that the Ligue 1 side’s finances were a bit limited, even if they are in desperate need of a new centre-back in January, having lost two of them to the Africa Cup of Nations.

On Tuesday, Ouest-France have a round up of the business Stade Rennais could do in the coming weeks, and mention the Southampton player in the process.

It’s explained that the French side’s first option to bolster their defence would be AS Monaco’s Guillermo Maripan, with whom they have already held ‘constructive talks’.

Their aim is to bring a right-footed centre-back before the end of the transfer window, and the principality side would be willing to sell for around €10m.

In fact, it’s pointed out that the ball is currently in Stade Rennais’ court, just like it is when it comes to Southampton’s Bednarek, as the Ligue 1 club ‘have to decide’ whether or not to spend the money.

The track leading to the Saints player was one Rennes opened as an alternative to Maripan, and they simply need to decide who to go for.
