Despite being an important part of their team this season, Jonathan Clauss could be on his way out from Marseille in the very foreseeable future, with West Ham United one of the clubs contacted to try and offload him.
This comes from L’Equipe on Wednesday, who explain that there are some concerns within the Ligue 1 side that the right-back is ‘sparing his efforts’ on the pitch, even if he is the player the most used by Gennaro Gattuso this season.
The belief is that he wants to be as fresh as possible for the 2024 Euros, which has turned him into a ‘persona non grata’ at the club,, with his manager ‘regularly regretting’ the player’s lack of disciple and effort.
The defender missed training on Tuesday, and the belief is that he won’t be easy to get rid of in the next day or so, which is why Marseille ‘called intermediaries’ to try and activate a few avenues, such as those leading to Galatasaray and West Ham.
However, it’s explained that Clauss ‘will not leave for the sake of it’, suggesting that if he does find himself a new club in the next few hours, he will want it to be the right one.
Whether that’s West Ham, or whether the Hammers are interested, isn’t said, but with both Vladimir Coufal and Ben Johnson’s contracts ending at the end of the season (the Czech international does have an option for an extra year in his deal), there’s a possibility the Premier League side sees this as a good opportunity.
One to keep an eye on.
