Having changed owners during the Covid-19 pandemic, AS Roma have had to improvise a bit on the transfer market, mostly using CEO Guido Fienga in negotiations around the globe.
He’s been mentioned an awful lot in the Chris Smalling case, helped by other members at the club, but there is a dire need for a new director of football.
That’s where Victor Orta comes in, as the Leeds United talent spotter is one of the names circulating at the Serie A club going forward.
The Spaniard has been key to the big turnaround at Elland Road in recent years, helping Marcelo Bielsa on the transfer market to create the squad we see today, one promoted from the Championship and returning to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years.
His hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed, and Gazzetta dello Sport explain there is a lot of ‘privacy’ when it comes to the names being studied by the Friedkin family, but they reveal three that have seemingly leaked.
The first is Ralf Rangnick, who came close to taking over at Milan, who ‘fascinates’ them.
The second is Orta himself, with the newspaper explaining they ‘like’ his profile.
As for the third, it’s none other than Lille’s Luis Campos, who has also worked with Marcelo Bielsa, although to nowhere near the same success as the Leeds director of football.
All three will be rather hard to get, but it shows how ambitious Roma are being under their new ownership.
Regarding Orta, there’s no indication of whether or not he’d be interested, but considering how involved he is at Leeds and how well thing are going, it would be a surprise to see him jump ship now.
On top of that, it’s worth pointing out Monchi, who’s very close to the Elland Road man after bringing him through, had an incredibly tough time at Roma.
Orta would, of course, make his own decision, but if he’s seen a close friend of his struggle there, it wouldn’t exactly fill him with confidence, regardless of whether or not there’s been a change of owners.
