Everton midfielder Amadou Onana is Barcelona’s number one target this summer as they look for a new defensive midfielder but they ‘consider it impossible’ to get a deal done for him.
That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who say the Everton midfielder is simply unaffordable for the Catalans at this moment in time.
The newspaper explains that while everyone at Barcelona agrees there is a need to sign a defensive midfielder this summer, the fact is they cannot afford one that will cost a significant transfer fee.
Onana is the one option that director of football Deco likes the most but the club ‘considers it impossible’ to actually get him because Everton will demand a fee that is ‘absolutely unaffordable’ for Barcelona’s current finances.
Mundo don’t put a definitive fee on the potential deal but numerous reports in recent months have set their asking price at €60m plus.
Whatever it is, it seems Barcelona believe their demands will be too high for them to even think about a deal, even though Onana is a player they like.
The notion of including players in the deal that had been mooted earlier this year appears to have been abandoned, although there is plenty of time for that to change. At the moment, though, an effort to get Onana from Everton does not appear to be on the cards.
