Despite a reported urgency from Marseille to sign Josh Doig from Hellas Verona by Friday night, the player was still in Italy on Monday morning, meaning the Serie A side’s attempts to acquire Ridvan Yilmaz from Rangers have yet to fully take off.
The Turkish left-back has been touted to be one of the exits at Ibrox this January, after feeling a bit unhappy under Philippe Clément, and the Italians were one of his reported favourite destinations, at least over a return to his home country.
Rangers, down their end, were said to be themselves interested in Doig, although look to be beaten by Marseille in that department, with Gazzetta dello Sport and Corriere Di Verona bringing the latest on the matter on Monday.
The former are very simplistic in their approach, making it clear that the Rangers man is ‘the target’ to replace the Scottish left-back in Verona.
Over at the local newspaper, they are far more optimistic than that, as they state Verona are ‘very close’ to the 22-year-old, who has started the last four games for the Ibrox side, including the 3-1 win at the weekend against Kilmarnock in which he picked up an assist.Doig is expected to bring in €6m + bonuses, so it appears the Italians will use that money to tempt Rangers into selling their man.
Whether Clément’s side actually do end up parting ways with a player who has been playing more of late, however, remains to be seen.
