The past few weeks have seen Pierre-Emile Højbjerg linked with a move away from Tottenham, with Atlético Madrid reportedly interested.
There’s been hope a deal could be done, but Marca on Friday bring that down a notch by claiming that barring João Félix, no one else will be sold, and that means no big midfield arrival.
That’s a blow for Tottenham, who are desperate to sell some of their unwanted players, as repeated by Ange Postecoglou in a press conference on Friday.
The manager made it clear the club could no longer bring in players because of the side of their current squad, and that meant getting rid of a few before the end of the transfer window.
Højbjerg will have been one of those, and yet Atlético Madrid, his most likely destination, are no longer sure they can go for him.
Marca explain that regardless of whether Félix is sold or not, the La Liga side know that they will not be able to afford someone like Marco Verratti or Højbjerg.
They are, however, ‘clinging’ onto the fact they have a good relationship with Tottenham, and perhaps the idea of a loan late in the window could work.
That being said, they also point out that Daniel Levy is a ‘tough negotiator’, but sometimes, needs simply must.
