Spanish side Celta Vigo are holding on to the hope Rafa Benitez can turn things around at the club, thanks to his history at Newcastle United.
That’s according to La Voz de Galicia, who say the fact Benitez managed to ‘save himself’ after a worse start at Newcastle is something Celta are clinging to.
Celta currently sit 18th in La Liga after managing just one goal in their first ten games of the season, losing six and drawing the other three.
Their start to life under Benitez, who took charge in the summer, has been a disastrous one, matching their worst start to a season in their history and largely being an unmitigated disaster.
Despite that the pressure has seemingly not been increasing on Benitez, with continued insistence that Celta’s board believe in the Spanish boss and are backing him.
That faith may be built on Benitez’s history, with La Voz explaining that they ‘cling to’ the ‘precedent’ that Benitez set at Newcastle.
In the 2018/19 season he had not tasted victory in his first ten games and managed just three points from three draws, leaving them 19th in the table and two points from safety.
Things turned around, though, and three positive results later meant they rose to 12th in the table, four points clear of relegation. Another blip followed but they rallied again and finished that season 13th in the table, nine points clear of the drop.
That turnaround has seemingly given Celta hope he can do the same with them and turn around what has been an absolutely disastrous start to his reign so far.
