Over the course of the January transfer window, we covered a number of reports claiming that Southampton had made a bid for Morten Hjulmand.
The defensive midfielder, who has been a star for Lecce ever since he arrived for €170k, caught the eye of scouts at St Mary’s, who felt he would be a good addition to Nathan Jones’ squad.
The manager has since been sacked by Southampton, so it remains to be seen whether the Saints will continue their pursuit of him going forward.
Gazzetta dello Sport, looking at the great work Pantaleo Corvino has done bringing in players for cheap and potentially reaping some major transfer benefits down the line, focus on the Dane for a bit.
Each report we covered about Southampton’s offer for Hjulmand stated that they had bid €11m, but the Italian newspaper claim it was actually more.
They explain that Corvino ‘rejected €13m’ from the Premier League club in January, before adding what has been said a number of times, which is he is now ‘worth at least €20m’.
If Southampton do decide to go after him, they will face competition, as Atalanta are lurking in Italy, while Dortmund and some other Premier League sides are also keen.
