PSV Eindhoven director of football Marcel Brands has insisted he doesn’t believed Cody Gakpo would have left at the club, even if Leeds had offered ‘the right amount’.
Gakpo was targeted by several Premier League clubs this summer after starring for the Dutch side last season, scoring 21 goals and registering 15 assists in 47 games in all competition last season.
Leeds were one of those who were keen, with them reinventing their forward line following Raphinha’s move to Barcelona.
They made an effort late in the window to secure his signature, even sending a flight over to Eindhoven to try and push it over the line.
They couldn’t strike a deal with PSV, though, with the Dutch club’s board electing to reject the money on offer in favour of keeping Gakpo at the club for another year.
The forward has since commented on the situation, admitting he was not keen on a move late in the window anyway as the whole process felt rushed for both him and the interested parties such as Leeds.
Now Brands has offered his stance on the situation, insisting that they never received an offer which matched their lowest demands anyway.
“I even think Cody would not have left at the end of the transfer period if the right amount had been offered,” Voetbal Primeur report him saying.
“There was no offer that approached the lower limit of what we agreed with Cody.”
