Chelsea bolstered their strike force by signing Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan in the last window.

Prior to Lukaku’s arrival, the west London club looked at other candidates, including Erling Haaland.

This was revealed by Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel during an interview with SportBild on Wednesday. The German also confirmed the Borussia Dortmund star continues to be discussed within the club.

“We talked about Erling Haaland a couple of times, including during the transfer window. But then it seemed absolutely unrealistic and not at all feasible,” Tuchel said.

“We talk about him regularly, of course, because he’s a fantastic player and clearly the defining figure at Dortmund, who is a big rival for us in the Champions League.”

The Norway international joined the Bundesliga side in January 2020, and since then, he’s managed 70 goals and 19 assists in 69 matches, out of which 13 goals and four assists have come from this season.

BVB suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Ajax and Bild point out it was the highest number of goals they have conceded in the Champions League so far. The latest loss could leave the 21-year-old concerned over competing for major trophies with Dortmund.

Haaland will have a €75m release clause next summer and with the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City and others said to be interested, he is ‘spoiled for choice’.

Bild also focused on comments made by Tuchel on Haaland and then state the Dortmund bosses ‘will not like to hear’ that, especially from their former manager, who has launched the ‘first public attack’ on their star.
