Marseille chief Pablo Longoria has bemoaned the growing difference between the Premier League and other European leagues, citing Boubacar Kamara’s move to Aston Villa as the perfect example.
Kamara joined Aston Villa on a free transfer from the French side earlier this summer, with the move considered a major coup for Steven Gerrard’s side.
His decision to join Villa was one that shocked many, especially as he also had interest from the likes of Atlético Madrid.
They, and Marseille, could offer him Champions League football, something that certainly isn’t on offer at Villa Park.
Several reports in France have made it clear, though, that it is the spending power that has drawn him to the Premier League instead.
Reports in France have made it clear he and his entourage have pocketed big sums courtesy of the player’s status as a free agent, something they have used to negotiate a lucrative contract from Aston Villa.
That has again been hinted at by Longoria, who has commented on the difference in spending power between the leagues.
“On the mercato, there are too many differences between the Premier League and the other leagues,” Le 10 Sport report him saying.
“We saw it with Bouba (Kamara) who preferred to go and play at Aston Villa instead of playing in the Champions League.
“In Italy and Germany, they try to do things differently. In France, the level has increased, the clubs invest more in the mercato. Covid forced us to maintain the wage bill better, which allowed us to reflect.”
