Newcastle United are keen on Manu Kone and have renewed hope of a deal.
The midfielder has been a key player for AS Roma since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2024. His dynamic skillset has become quite a threat in Serie A, with Gian Piero Gasperini bringing more out of him this season.
Some weeks ago, Sport Witness extensively covered Newcastle United’s interest in the Frenchman. Roma’s financial situation was a big reason behind this, as they had to sell players by the end of June to stay within UEFA restrictions.
After a period of chaos, the Italian side now find themselves in the Champions League spots. With a game to go, they are two points clear of Como and Juventus.
Ideally, that would remove financial uncertainties, but this might not be the case.
Roma still interested in sale
Today, Il Messaggero make it clear that Kone is still a major candidate to leave Roma in the summer. Even if Champions League qualification will help them, the Giallorossi would look forward to a ‘shower of millions’ from Kone’s sale.
One big name is expected to depart the Stadio Olimpico and the France international could be that player.
Newcastle United’s interest finds mention, amidst indications that Kone’s entourage is offering him around. Atletico Madrid were given the chance to sign him in recent weeks but they haven’t got into the matter.
This comes as renewed hope for the Magpies, with Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain are also in the picture.
Roma’s game against Verona at the weekend is expected to be Kone’s last for the club. However, there is every chance his valuation grows further depending on how he performs at the World Cup with Les Bleus.
Magpies move likely difficult
Newcastle United’s failure to qualify for Europe will hinder their hopes of signing Kone. He’s played in the Europa League at Roma, and Inter and PSG can offer him Champions League football.
The Nerazzurri have been long-term admirers and tried to sign him last summer. PSG would be his chance of returning to his home country.
He could be a very appropriate replacement for Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali. But the final decision should come down to the ex-Gladbach man, who may prefer another club.
