Barcelona are ‘attentive’ to the possibility of a renewed bid for Cesar Azpilicueta in the summer if Chelsea continue to add to their squad in the coming months.
That’s according to Sport, who say the Spanish side are ‘on the lookout’ for Azpilicueta given Chelsea’s desire to sign a new right-back.
They explain that Barcelona are still working to strengthen their right-back spot for next season and want to sign an experienced player who won’t cost too much given their salary cap issues.
They had targeted Azpilicueta last summer and their belief is that the possibility of a deal ‘could open up again’ if Chelsea sign a right-back, such as Malo Gusto, who has been heavily linked this month or Denzel Dumfries.
That would potentially leave Azpilicueta without a role if Reece James also returns from injury and there is a possibility he ‘could have the doors open’ to leave Stamford Bridge.
If that was the case Barcelona would be ready to scoop him up and are ‘keeping an eye’ on the situation so they are ready to move if they need to.
They would never pay a transfer fee for the player, so some negotiations would be needed with Chelsea if the player was to move to the Nou Camp, but they are certainly interested if he becomes available.
