Newcastle United have invested on Dan Burn and Sven Botman to strengthen the heart of their defence in this calendar year.
Burn arrived at St James’ Park in January, while the Magpies signed Botman from Lille this summer. These deals have not stopped the Tyneside club from targeting another player in the same position.
That’s according to the weekend edition of Correio da Manhã, who state Newcastle have an interest in Gonçalo Inácio and even made a €33m bid to Sporting for the defender.
Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the 20-year-old, who is essential for the Lions manager, Rúben Amorim.
The Ligue 1 winners are the latest club to join the race for the Portugal U21 international, along with Manchester United and Barcelona. PSG are planning to make an offer worth €30m for the player, but this won’t be enough to convince Sporting chief Frederico Varandas.
That’s because the Primeira Liga side ‘already refused an offer’ of €33m from Newcastle for Inácio. Sporting have ‘set the price’ for their player’s exit and it is his €45m release clause.
Correio da Manhã state this amount is significant, but ‘far from frightening’ for the likes of Newcastle and PSG, who are interested in the Portuguese defender.
The asking price claim goes against other reports in Portugal this weekend. Given that, and other aspects, it feels like Sporting, or an agent, are dangling the player in the market and wondering how high they can aim.
