On Tuesday, Norwich City appointed Philippe Clement as their new manager, after previously being linked with Jon Dahl Tomasson.
The Championship side have endured a difficult run, winning just two league games so far this season. They’re in 23rd spot, in the relegation zone, above only Sheffield Wednesday.
Norwich City have tasked Clement with turning things around and helping them get out of this difficult situation.
Stephan Van Der Heyden was the Belgian’s assistant at Rangers and now followed him to Carrow Road. Sporza have spoken to Van der Heyden about the English club and the issues ahead.
Van der Heyden says he understands the decision to join Norwich City may have surprised some. However, he explained to the Belgium media why the Canaries project convinced Clement.
“I think many people might be a bit taken aback by Philippe’s choice, but I hear he’s had some very good conversations with the club, especially with the American owners.” he said.
“They have great long-term plans. This project appealed to him. We definitely see potential.”
Norwich City face several issues
Clement’s assistant is of the belief the current Norwich City squad may be too young to handle the pressure at difficult moments. This is one of the problems Clement & co. have found after arriving at the club.
“There are 10 injured players, but there’s also a lack of confidence,” Van der Heyden explained.
“Because things aren’t going well, people are quickly losing their heads. It’s also a young squad, perhaps even too young. These are things we’re going to try to address.”
Van der Heyden is confident Clement can turn things around at Norwich City.
“Everything is very close together, and it’s not an easy league. It’s very physical. There are probably several reasons why things went wrong. But the past is the past, we have to look ahead,” he added.
“There are still a lot of games to come. We know from the past that things can move quickly here.”
