According to Calciomercato in Italy, Tottenham are interested in signing Chris Smalling from Manchester United.
Earlier on Thursday, Corriere dello Sport had an article on the defender’s situation in Rome and what the player was thinking about his future.
There were still ‘some doubts’ in the centre-back’s head regarding AS Roma’s plans going forward, as missing out on the Champions League could see them start their project from scratch, which wouldn’t suit the England international.
However, Smalling was said to be happy in Rome and there was hope from the Italians’ end that he would contact United and tell them he wanted to remain in Italy beyond this season.
For that to happen, the two clubs would need to reach an agreement over a fee, which is what Calciomercato are claiming is currently being discussed.
Manchester United’s stance hasn’t changed, as they still want €20m, while Roma are only prepared to pay €15m after contacts over the weekend.
They might have to act fast and find that extra €5m, however, as Daniele Longo, a reporter for the Italian website, explains Tottenham are also ‘strong on the player’ and are ‘moving for the centre-back’, which the Serie A club are aware of.
It would make sense for José Mourinho to be interested in Smalling, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Jan Vertonghen’s future, as the centre-back was a regular under the Portuguese at Old Trafford.
Not exactly what Roma need right now, as they try and convince everyone it would be best for the player to stay where he is.
