Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro has rejected offers from Aston Villa and Newcastle United to stay with the Spanish side this summer.

That’s according to COPE, who report that Aston Villa and Newcastle were negotiating to sign the goalkeeper for his release clause this summer.

According to their information Remiro has been the target for several European teams this summer and both Aston Villa and Newcastle tried to sign him.

They both initiated contact to negotiate the terms of his €70m release clause, but the goalkeeper has rejected both offers.

Aston Villa saw Remiro as a reliable alternative in case Emiliano Martinez leaves this summer. Remiro even spoke about their interest in a recent interview. Newcastle, meanwhile, made an offer in July but nothing has been presented to Sociedad. Presumably this means they spoke to the player’s entourage.

Remiro, though, has turned down the interest from both clubs as he prefers to remain at the Spanish club, where he is now one of the leaders of the dressing room.

We’d question if Aston Villa or Newcastle were genuinely going to pay €70m for the goalkeeper as that seems a high price, but it seems the interest was definitely there and swiftly pushed away.
