Following Vasco da Gama’s confirmation of Andrey Santos’ transfer to Chelsea, the Brazilian media is back on speaking about the price of this transfer.

SBT features a new story claiming the Blues are spending €20m to sign the midfielder, and it turns out that part of it is going to the player himself.

According to the report, Andrey Santos owned 30% of his rights, which means Vasco da Gama are only keeping about €14m of that sale.

A player receiving such a big amount from the transfer may not be something very common in Europe’s top leagues, but that’s no strange thing in Brazil, where footballers often own a percentage of their rights.

That usually happens in negotiations for contract renewals, where instead of giving players huge pay raises, Brazilian clubs find an alternative way by giving their players a percentage of a future move.

That’s what happened last year, when Andrey signed a new deal and also got 30% of his rights.

These percentages could also be sacrificed by the player in case they want to make the transfer cheaper to the club who are buying them.

In this case, though, it seems Chelsea are paying the full amount.
