Timo Werner has received attention from the Premier League, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea credited with an interest in the RB Leipzig star.

Earlier reports coming out of Germany suggested the striker ‘would prefer to go to Liverpool’.

AS now claims the 24-year-old has become the ‘object of desire’ for the aforementioned three clubs, with Jürgen Klopp’s side believed to be favourite to acquire his signature.

It’s claimed Werner’s potential move to England looked an open secret until a few weeks ago, but the ‘current situation in world football’ seems to have put his possible transfer in serious danger.

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, football across Europe is suspended and this will have an impact on the clubs’ earnings, including that of Liverpool. The report adds the situation has raised Leipzig’s chances of retaining Werner beyond this season.

Werner’s contract with Leipzig is until 2023 and has a release clause of €60m, which needs to be activated before end of April. AS states that most clubs will not be able to know the extent of financial loss they would have incurred by the end of next month.

There could be a possibility that the final date to exercise Werner’s clause will be extended due to the ongoing pandemic, although the report fails to mention that.

Despite the claims made by AS, it’s looked like it’s been Werner keen on joining Klopp’s side and not the other way around.

In addition to this, the financial situation is unlikely to hold Liverpool back from bringing the German to Anfield if that’s the plan they had in place anyway.
