Tottenham Hotspur have ‘taken an interest’ in Manchester United veteran David de Gea ahead of him becoming a free-agent in the summer.
That’s according to Fichajes, who say that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is already ‘working on’ a deal to sign the Spanish goalkeeper as soon as the season ends.
De Gea’s current Manchester United contract expires this summer, and he is yet to agree to an extension to take his time at the club beyond an 11th year.
United do have an option to extend it by another year but are yet to do so, instead preferring to focus on talks over a new deal.
At this moment in time, it appears the veteran keeper will be leaving the club and moving elsewhere, with Manchester United being linked to goalkeepers around Europe also.
They explain that Spurs need to find a new goalkeeper to replace Hugo Lloris, who still has another year to go on his contract but has seen his performances drop ‘considerably’ this season.
That’s led the club and Daniel Levy to make their move and they’re ‘already working’ on their attempt to bring De Gea to the club.
We’ll have to take this report with a pinch of salt for the time being, though. For a start it’s far more likely that De Gea returns to Spain than stays in England should he leave Manchester United this summer after so long in England.
It’s also debatable why Tottenham would want to sign a 32-year-old to replace Lloris when there are younger, better alternatives available.
It’s also questionable whether De Gea would want to move to Spurs given his time at United and his likely loyalty to them. Thus we’d advise taking this with a big, healthy pinch of salt for the time being.
