Julian Nagelsmann needs to change his plans with Germany ahead of Euro 2024, as Arsenal’s Kai Havertz is not good enough to lead the line for his country.
That’s according to Olaf Thon, who believes the Arsenal star would be better placed elsewhere in the team if they are to enjoy success on home soil.
Havertz is likely to be Germany’s first choice striker at Euro 2024 after a solid first season with Arsenal following his move from Chelsea last summer.
He initially struggled to live up to his €70m transfer fee at the Emirates but eventually found his feet in Mikel Arteta’s system, bagging 14 goals and seven assists in 51 games, largely playing as the striker in the team.
Havertz is likely to be given that role for Germany too, having played in the position for them since Nagelsmann took charge last year, with it considered something of a weak point in the squad.
He’s impressed in the role when given his chance, recently bagging goals again Greece, France and Ukraine while playing in the centre-forward position.
Thon is unimpressed, though, and believes the Arsenal man’s presence in the position could stop Germany going all the way.
“For me, Kai Havertz is not a centre forward,” Neunzig Plus report him saying to SID.
“I don’t think we’ll be strong enough to get past the quarterfinals with him. For me there is only something to be said for Füllkrug.”
