Antonio Conte waited ‘until the last moment’ for the Manchester United job to become available before accepting Tottenham’s offer instead.

That’s according to journalist Roberto Gotta, who believes the Italian has made the right choice by deciding to join Spurs.

Conte was confirmed as Tottenham’s new manager on Tuesday following Nuno Espirito Santo’s sacking on Monday.

He had been approached by the club when they were looking to replace Jose Mourinho in the summer but rejected their approaches in the belief a bigger club would come calling.

There have certainly been rumours, too, with Manchester United almost continually linked over the last few months as pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has mounted.

Should he have been sacked then, Conte was the obvious man to replace him, largely because he was one of only a few high-profile managers available on the market.

Instead, he’s ended up at Tottenham; a decision Gotta believes he will come to recognise as a smart one in the long-term.

“I understand that there was a wait until the last moment; Manchester United have a better squad and more decisive players,” he told Tuttomercatoweb.

“However, Manchester United have never publicly lacked confidence in Solskjaer. Perhaps even to reassure him…

“Conte in Manchester should have won immediately, while in Tottenham, he should have prepared the team for next season.

“I think he did the right thing, or else he risked not doing half of it.”
