On July 3rd, AS reported Arsenal are in the bidding for Athletic star Nico Williams this summer.
The winger, who starred for the La Liga side last season, was part of the Spain squad that won the Euro 2024 and he scored in the final against England. His performances for club and country haven’t gone unnoticed.
Barcelona are keen on signing him, but they will face a ‘threat’ from Arsenal, according to Sport.
It’s claimed the Gunners are prioritising a deal for the 22-year-old as he’s the ‘chosen one’ to bolster their attack in this window.
Mikel Arteta’s side are aware that it won’t be easy for them to secure his services. They also know Barcelona are ahead of them in the transfer race.
Sport say Williams has a €58m release clause and he can only change clubs if the clause is activated because the Basque club have no intention to negotiate a deal for his sale.
Barcelona’s economic conditions make it difficult for them to sign Williams, despite him favouring to join them.
Arsenal, on the other hand, have ‘greater financial capacity’ than the Catalan club, but will have to convince the player to get the deal over the line.
