Tottenham Hotspur were regularly named as a keen suitor for Nicolò Zaniolo throughout the recently concluded transfer window.
Spurs chief Fabio Paratici has long been an admirer of the AS Roma star and even tried signing him during his time at Juventus.
Antonio Conte is also a fan of the winger and was reportedly behind Tottenham’s efforts to sign him in the summer.
Amid reports of Spurs’ interest, the Italy international didn’t end up leaving the Serie A side. Roma general manager Tiago Pinto spoke to the reporters and Giallorossi.net have relayed his comments. He was asked ‘how close’ Zaniolo was to joining Tottenham.
Responding to that, the Roma chief said: “Zaniolo was never close to leaving. Nicolò, as explained many times, last season was a season of recovery, this is even better. He has never been a problem, he is fine and happy. He wants to help the team.”
José Mourinho’s man has two years left on his contract and there have been claims of talks over a new deal with the UEFA Conference League winners.
On the topic of Zaniolo’s renewal, Pinto said: “I called [Zaniolo’s agent Claudio] Vigorelli to make the calendar for our meetings, it is not a concern.”
