Chido Obi joined Manchester United on a free transfer in 2024 and there was a lot of excitement around his arrival.
The striker starred for Arsenal’s youth teams and was expected to replicate that form for the Red Devils. He made his Manchester United senior debut and February. Including that Chido Obi got 212 minutes from seven games in the second half of last season.
Ruben Amorim hasn’t used the 17-year-old this season. Chido Obi has had to settle for minutes with Manchester United U21s, managing three goals from four games.
Leaving on loan was mentioned for Chido Obi in the summer but it wasn’t Manchester United’s plan.
The Denmark U21 international’s situation at the Premier League club has caused Danish concern, and Tipsbladet cover the latest.
Former Denmark international Mikkel Beckmann, who is now a pundit for Viaplay, says the youngster shouldn’t have to settle for youth minutes. He suggested a Manchester United exit may be the answer.
Danish fear Chido Obi is far from Manchester United minutes
“The reserve team matches… it doesn’t taste particularly good. It’s like when we have our Future Cup matches at home. It’s the reserves who play, and it’s just far from the same as playing first-team football,” he said.
“I just don’t think the time is right for Amorim to suddenly try Chido Obi out at United.
“He is very, very far from the first team at United. I would like to see him play some senior football at a higher level than just reserves at United.”
Manchester United signed Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig in the summer window and he is first choice striker. Joshua Zirkzee and Matheus Cunha can be used as a No.9, but it’s their position.
Chido Obi is young and time with reserve team can help him with his development. Beckmann is going over the top with his analysis of the teenager.
A loan exit could be beneficial if there’s no route to first team minutes.
