A few days ago we covered some worry building in Denmark around Chido Obi. The 17-year-old looks far from making appearances from Manchester United’s first team right now.
That’s no surprise given his age, but the expectation around the youngster is huge. Whilst still at Arsenal, Chido Obi was seen as a star of the future. Those expectations followed him to Manchester United.
The striker made his debut for the Red Devils in February and then went on to start a match in May. This season he’s not in Ruben Amorim’s immediate plans and the club are putting work into his all-round game.
The latter part has now been explained by Denmark U21 manager Lars Knudsen.
Chido Obi hasn’t been included in the latest Denmark U21 squad, and Knudsen has obviously been pressed on that. The coach has explained Manchester United are working on aspects of the youngster’s game.
Whether the club have asked he isn’t picked or whether Knudsen just hasn’t selected Chido Obi isn’t made clear.
Denmark U21 coach explains Chido Obi situation
Tipsbladet quote Knudsen as saying: “Chido is at United right now and working on some things purely sportingly that he needs to put into his game. He sometimes starts in the U21 team (at United, ed.). We have a close dialogue both with Chido and with the club about where he is in terms of development.
“We follow him closely and we watch all his minutes, and we also do the same with all the other players we have in the squad and around the team.”
Pressed on what aspects Manchester United are working on, Knudsen said: “Among other things, he needs to participate a little more in some team-related things. He is a good goalscorer, but he could also score many specific types of goals.
“And there may also be some other types of goals that he needs to become good at scoring. So there are some different things he needs to put into his game. He clearly has some top skills and he has exciting potential, there is no doubt about that.”
