Chelsea defender David Luiz has been interviewed by Yahoo Brasil journalist Jorge Nicola this weekend.
The player, who seemed close on leaving the club after a bad time with Antonio Conte last season, now claims to be happy to make a turnaround in the past year.
“It was a year when I could do what I love and what I know, in a club where I’ve always felt at home”, David Luiz told Jorge Nicola. “I gained the confidence of the manager and managed to show on the pitch that I deserve to be playing. It was a special season”.
David Luiz has just signed a two-year extension, something rare for a player over 30, and claims to be glad about it.
“This is a special moment. I love being here, I love Chelsea. I feel the same ambition as when I was a young player, and I think that’s why I’m taking that opportunity. I have the same willpower, and I am very happy to defend Chelsea for a few more years.”
“Sarri is a great human being. A great person. And the work he’s been doing in just one season is incredible. He has a philosophy of his own and we have been assimilating what the coach wants for the team. We know there are details to be settled, but what he has done is incredible.”
The defender has also revealed he had the chance to join Palmeiras this summer, but chose to stay in Europe for a few more years.
“It’s always good to be remembered by great teams. Brazil is my home and a return, in a few years, is not ruled out. But it’s not time yet.”
He’s also claimed that he would accept to miss his vacations so he could play the Copa America in the summer: “Undoubtedly. The national team is the coronation for any player”.
David Luiz currently has 247 appearances for Chelsea, and seems eager to largely increase that number.
He makes it sound like his spell at PSG never really existed.
