Last week, we covered claims from Germany which stated Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is on Chelsea’s radar.
Bild now provide more on the west London club’s interest in the 27-year-old.
Chelsea have been chasing the stopper for a long time and are hoping he would make a switch to Stamford Bridge next year.
Enzo Maresca has Robert Sánchez as his first-choice goalkeeper, with Filip Jörgensen as the Spaniard’s backup. Sánchez has kept three clean sheets and conceded 18 goals from 15 games this season.
Despite this, Bild say the Blues are looking at the Switzerland international because their officials believe he has ‘what it takes to become the best goalkeeper in the world’.
In October 2023, Kobel extended his contract with the Bundesliga side until 2028, with the aim of winning trophies. BVB came close in the Champions League last season, losing the final to Real Madrid.
Dortmund have been knocked out of the DFB-Pokal and have struggled in the league this season. They are currently eighth in the table, five points behind fourth placed RB Leipzig.
If the German club fail to qualify for the Champions League, the report states Chelsea’s chances of securing Kobel’s services would ‘increase enormously’ next summer.
In other words, the Blues have to wait until the end of this season to sign their longtime target.
