With Chelsea’s transfer ban recently being overturned, it was inevitable that they would be linked with everyone imaginable.
The Blues are not exactly short of players, or in desperate need of any, but having a major club back on the market was always going to be too tempting for the rumour mill.
As such, it’s no surprise that today sees El Desmarque suggesting Chelsea are ready to make a move for Real Madrid midfielder James Rodríguez in the January transfer window.
Rodríguez is out of favour at the Bernabéu and has long been linked with a move away, either next month or next summer.
According to the report, Chelsea are ready to make a move happen sooner rather than later and ‘would be willing’ to put €50m on the table for a move in January.
Roman Abramovich is good friends with Jorge Mendes, who represents the Colombian, and believes he can get the player to make the move.
His situation at Madrid helps their cause, with Rodríguez keen to avoid ending up in a situation similar Gareth Bale’s, and therefore hopes an agreement to get him out of the club can be found this winter.
That gives Chelsea hope of getting a deal done, although it’s a little hard to believe the rumour as it is.
Why would Lampard want to add a highly-paid superstar to his squad when their success this season has been built on him giving the young players a chance?
Similarly, would Abramovich be willing to pay €50m for such a player having seen the success, and positive atmosphere, the youngsters, have brought this season.
It seems unlikely, and it’s more plausible that El Desmarque, who’ve been pushing Rodríguez exit rumours for a while, are simply putting two and two together for the sake of it.
