Chelsea are making a fresh attempt to sign RB Leipzig star Joško Gvardiol after being left empty handed in their pursuit in the last transfer window.
That’s according to Alfredo Pedullà, who says the Blues have a meeting scheduled, likely after the Qatar World Cup, to discuss signing the 20-year-old.
Chelsea are in close contact with the Croatia international’s agent and work is in progress to close the deal.
Graham Potter, who took charge at the west London club back in September, has given his approval for this operation as he sees Gvardiol as perfect for his style of football.
In the summer, Leipzig refused to accept €80m for the centre-back, who can also operate on the left side of the defence. Gvardiol, who wasn’t open to a move in the last window, is now ‘ready for the big leap’.
In the past few days, intermediaries have signalled Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in the Croatian. In order to ‘outperform the competition’, Chelsea ‘will do everything and more to close’ the deal for the versatile player.
The Blues’ strategy is to at least have a guarantee now for the player to arrive at the club next summer, which is why they are ‘pushing to close’ the operation. Alfredo Pedullà does not mention the fee Chelsea plan to offer to Leipzig.
