Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno has backed Timo Werner to be a success at Chelsea, claiming the move would be ‘great’ for the striker.

Werner has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this summer after an impressive season in the Bundesliga.

For much of the year, it looked like Liverpool could be the ones securing his signature, particularly after it was claimed Jürgen Klopp spoke to the player about moving to Anfield.

However, Chelsea have now emerged as the frontrunners for his signature, with it believed they are ready to pay his release clause now, something Liverpool could not do.

Negotiations over the move continue, with Werner reportedly having agreed to a five-year, €10m a year deal at Stamford Bridge after manager Frank Lampard convinced him to make the move.

The transfer seems likely to be completed sooner rather than later, with the two clubs trying to figure out a way for Werner to undergo a medical amid the current Coronavirus restrictions.

Should he move, Leno, who played with Werner at Stuttgart, is backing him to be a success.

“I get on very well with Timo. He is very welcome in London,” the Arsenal goalkeeper told Sky Sports Germany.

“I would be happy for him, Chelsea is a great choice, no question about it.

“The Premier League is faster, more physical. But I think he’s good for it. Timo is an extremely fast player.

“With his qualities and killer instinct, I’m afraid I have to say, he could be reinforcing Chelsea.”
