When Chelsea agreed to sell Tammy Abraham to AS Roma, there was a lot of talk about a buy-back clause that became active in 2023 for the Blues.
That was reportedly set at €80m, but the Premier League side didn’t make use of it last summer as the forward suffered a serious knee injury right at the end of the season that has kept him out until very recently.
However, the idea of a return to Chelsea for the forward is still a topic of conversation these days, as shown by Corriere dello Sport on Tuesday.
The newspaper look at the future of Romelu Lukaku, currently on loan from Stamford Bridge in Rome, and explain that, as things stand, the Serie A side will not be buying the Belgian.
Despite scoring 18 goals, he would cost them €43m, and ‘the numbers still don’t add up’ for the Italians, who will ‘likely part ways’ with the striker at the end of the campaign.
Once he returns to Chelsea, ‘his future will be defined’, but the Friedkin family are ‘unlikely to honour’ the €43m demands from the Blues to get a deal done.
However, there is another option available, as Corriere state the idea ‘of a discount’, perhaps with Abraham returning to London, ‘remains on the table’.
If this were to happen, Chelsea would be regaining a youth product of the club while getting rid of a flop they have wanted to dismiss for the best part of two years.
Regardless, Roma are unlikely to do anything before June or July, as that’s when everything ‘financial and technical will be clearer’.
