Catalan outlet Sport reports Chelsea have now ‘started negotiating’ the signing of Frenkie De Jong from Barcelona.

With Manchester United failing to convince the midfielder to move to Old Trafford, it’s now the Blues who are making an effort to bring him to the Premier League.

Sport writes that Chelsea first asked about the player at the start of June, having made it known last week that they’d go for the signing, and now started moving ‘in an official way’ to begin with the talks.

Unlike with Manchester United, it’s said the attempt from the Blues ‘should have the ok from the footballer’. Even though De Jong and his staff thought it’d be ‘hard’ for him to leave the Camp Nou this summer, the interest from the Premier League side ‘could provoke a change of idea’ in him and his entourage.

Barcelona continue to demand a minimum of €80m for the sale, and Chelsea’s idea would be to work with the Catalan side’s interest in Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso.

Since Barça want separate deals for the Blues’ fullbacks, and the London side still must find an agreement with De Jong, it’s made clear that the deal is ‘very complicated’, but ‘not impossible’ if the Dutch player cooperates with it.

Sport claims the talks have just started, but Chelsea have a ‘certain hurry’ to get it done. It’s pointed that despite their struggle to get some signings this summer, they could ‘win the battle’ against Manchester United by landing De Jong.
